The Bennett Place - Where the Civil War Ended

The Bennett Place is the site of the largest surrender of the Civil War. General Lee surrendered to General Grant at Appomattox on April 9th, 1865. Jefferson Davis met General Johnston on April 11 in Greensboro NC, wanting to continue the fight, but allowing General Johnston to meet with General Sherman. On April 15, Lincoln died from an assassin's bullet, and General Johnston and General Sherman met first on April 17. On April 26th, disobeying orders from Jefferson Davis, General Johnston met General Sherman again, and they completed the largest surrender of the Civil War, and put an end to that great conflict. Two other smaller Confederate surrenders followed in May.

Today, the reconstructed farmhouse is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday. Special events are scheduled throughout the year.
